NCDC Chalk Dance Project

Campers young and old at Northern California Dance Collective NCDC Summer Dance Camp 2010 combined their creative energies to produce this community animated "Chalk Dance." NCDC Art Director Luna Baron approved the community art project conceived and submitted by Media Artist Paula Achter (aka Tambourina). Campers with many different skill sets helped to build the horizontal chalk table and camera boom including architect David Ludwig, Contractor OwlSwan, builders Melodee Piper, Ariana Ross, Bernie, Shana Sturm and others TBD. Most of the materials used were recovered from a camp landfill. Dana Ross did the tech support. He used a canon G5 with its software set to shoot shots all day between 5 and 10 seconds apart. Campers were free to animate all day and the footage was downloaded each evening and rendered into a movie using Picasa. Campers saw their work the next morning and grew in their skills as the week progressed. Kids as young as 4 grasped the concept and marvelous things happened every day. A quick edit was played at the Friday night talent show. Paula added more of the kids footage to this version, so that everyone could see their contributions. Thank you campers for a wonderful playful collaboration.
